Event Details

Join us Memorial Day Weekend at the Gene Siskel Film Center for a reception and screening of the Korean film Aeja (aka GOODBYE MOM), a funny and poignant story about the rocky, distanced relationship of budding writer Aeja and her lively veterinarian mother.  Life hasn’t turned out quite as planned for Aeja, now in her late twenties, recently dumped by her boyfriend and saddled with debt. An invitation to her brother’s wedding has her plotting a nasty surprise for mom, but that doesn’t turn out as planned either, opening a most unexpected way to redemption for both mother and daughter. In Korean with English subtitles. 35mm. (BS)

The film is a humorous and moving examination of the intergenerational conflict between a Korean parent and her child, and would be a good film for parents and children from all cultures to watch together.  It also represents what the Chicago Tribune has described as the explosion of Korean film in the past decade.
